Spring signals open season on many local farmers’ markets

The annual tradition of the Farmers’ Community Market at Brookside continues to meet the challenge of connecting local food to local folks!

A Saturday staple (from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) in the parking lot of Border Star Elementary School at the corner of 63rd & Wornall, the Farmers’ Community Market at Brookside strives to create a unique partnership between local farmers and the community.

Each week more than a dozen vendors set up shop on a small strip of the school’s parking lot. White tents adorn the venue with so much more to offer than just great produce!

You can start your journey by meeting friends over a cup of Puddin’ Head Coffee (Kansas City, MO) or you might just want to feed that sweet tooth with some cinnamon rolls from Bread of Life (Stewartsville, MO). Whatever you choose you can be assured that the products featured are a mix of local and/or certified organic producers.

Now that your sugar and caffeine intake has you prepared to shop, you can venture through the maze of freshly-picked vegetables, fragrant herbs, fruit, baked goods, meat, eggs, cheese, and cut flowers. Bear Creek Farms (Osceola, MO) always has a wealth of fire engine red tomatoes to choose from and the stellar cheese and lamb selection from Green Dirt Farm will make any cocktail party a hit. Benedict Builders Farm (Knob Knoster, MO) also showcases some amazing beef and pork. The Market’s farmers use sustainable and humane practices to produce hormone-free and antibiotic-free meat, as well as free-range eggs and honey products.

Throughout the summer months the market has special events for the entire family. Don’t be surprised if you bump in to a week-old lamb (for petting) or a local musician providing a soundtrack for your shopping spree.

BE SURE TO visit the other great stores in the Brookside Shopping District, just across the street, after your trip to the market!
